What is Vermeil?
What is vermeil? (Pronounced vehr-MAY). It's a metal that consists of a silver core covered by a gold-plated outer surface. It's sometimes used in jewelry components. Vermeil originated in France in the mid-1700's, where it was processed into beads, rings, earrings, and other jewelry pieces. However, in the mid-1800's vermeil production was halted because the process required the use of mercury. Today vermeil is still used in some jewelry components - but now it's made safely with an electrolytic process. |
